Announcing the Redis Insiders Program

We’re excited to launch our first ambassador program: Redis Insiders.

Redis is open source and has millions of users around the world. That puts our developer community at the heart of our products. We’re eager to work together with our most dedicated and passionate community members to raise their profiles by educating the world about Redis.

If you’re a developer who uses Redis and loves to write and talk about your code, you could become a Redis Insider. We particularly encourage applications from underrepresented groups in tech.

What will the Redis Insiders do?

The Redis Insiders will work closely, on a voluntary basis, with the Redis Developer Relations team to educate and enthuse our large and growing user base. What’s obvious to you and me isn’t necessarily obvious to everyone, and our overarching goal is to make it frictionless for developers to get started using Redis to solve problems they’re working on. We’re looking for folks who are and will continue to be good Redis community members: kind, respectful and inclusive.

You’ll be spreading the word about Redis, via our channels and third-party channels (e.g. conferences, meetups, tech publications). We’re asking you to commit to a minimum tenure of six months in the first instance, with the opportunity to renew your role up to three times (for a maximum possible total of two years). Possible activities for Redis Insiders include:

  • Writing blog posts about Redis
  • Speaking at relevant technology conferences on a Redis topic
  • Speaking at online meetups
  • Being a guest speaker at Redis events
  • Being present and visible on our Discord server weekly; help other members with their questions and problems
  • Creating live streams and videos for our YouTube and Twitch channels

Another important component of the Redis Insiders role is to act as the voice of the developer community and bring us feedback around your Redis pain points and what you’d love to see more of. We want you to tell us what you need from our products to help you reach your goals, and we’ll meet with you on a regular basis to talk this through. We’d also love it if you could make code contributions to our repos, for example, the Redis code base, Redis University courses, or our client libraries and demo applications.

What’s in it for you?

We are immensely grateful to anyone who gives up their time to champion our technology, and we will support you in your role as a Redis Insider. While we’ll be expecting you to have some experience in technical blogging and public speaking, we know that some people are stronger at, say, writing, than they are at presenting in public, or vice versa. Our Developer Relations team is comprised of professional speakers and writers. We can coach you in the areas where you feel you need it, as well as proofread your blog posts and help you ideate and practice your talks.

Some of the other things we can offer include:

  • Exclusive, private, Redis Insiders-only previews of new product releases
  • The ability to provide feedback directly to our product team
  • A special Redis Insider role on our Discord server
  • A private Discord channel(s) where you can access DevRel and product staff during working hours
  • Financial assistance with delivering talks where you are speaking about Redis
  • Promotion of your work via Redis communications channels (e.g. Twitter, LinkedIn, Redis website)
  • A personal profile on our website

Whom are we looking for?

As a Redis Insider, you’ll be part of a select group of developers who love to write and talk about code.  Bearing in mind the types of activities you’ll be working on, you’ll need to be a confident public speaker with demonstrable experience in coding, using Redis, and creating different types of content. You’ll also need a good standard of written and spoken English. In terms of Redis knowledge, at a minimum, you’ll need to have passed our Redis University RU101 course, Introduction To Data Structures by the time you become an Insider. (I took this course when I joined the company – see how I got on!)

Demonstrable experience in any of the following will be a plus:

  • Technical blogging, on any site (i.e. could be your blog) and on any technical topic
  • Live streaming or presenting technical videos
  • Coding projects that we can view (e.g.: GitHub and/or your website, preferably accompanied by a suitable README)
  • Regular participation on our Discord server or other similar Redis discussion groups
  • Speaking at meetups and an awareness of the tech communities that you could be delivering a Redis talk for.

Want to apply?

If this all sounds interesting, you can apply by completing the Redis Insiders application form. If we think you might be a good fit, we’ll invite you to join us for a call so we can get to know you a bit better. We want to bring together a diverse group of developers. We don’t have a closing date for applications, but we want to onboard the first cohort of Insiders by the end of July. If you are someone from an underrepresented group in tech who is unsure about applying and would like to chat with me beforehand, send me an e-mail. I would love to hear from you.
