Redis Creator, Salvatore Sanfilippo (Antirez), Joins Redis Labs

Will join forces with the company’s development team to make Redis the database of choice for high performance applications

Mountain View, July 15, 2015—Redis announced today that the creator of open-source Redis, Salvatore Sanfilippo (Antirez), is joining the company as Lead, Open Source Redis Development. In this capacity, Salvatore will continue to lead the development of the enormously popular open source in-memory NoSQL database, a role he performed previously at Pivotal Inc. and VMware.

Founded in 2011, Redis, has seen tremendous growth with 5,000+ paying customers and 31,000 additional customers using its free offering, creating over 104,000 databases with its technology. The company has raised $28 million in funding to date from Bain Capital Ventures, Carmel Ventures, Silicon Valley Bank and others. A recent survey by DevOps.com and ClusterHQ ranks Redis as the most popular NoSQL database in containers.

“Redis has made remarkably steady work of building a very strong company, with an expert team of developers enhancing the core of Redis, and a great set of products that provide Redis users with the commercial choices they need,” said Salvatore Sanfilippo. “Redis is willing to continue what VMware and Pivotal started and this is the right move for the future of Redis. I will continue to spend all my time on the open source side of the project, while Redis continues to provide Redis users with a hassle-free Redis deployment experience, through its products and services. As I team up with Redis, we will see many more contributions from Redis developers to the Redis core.”

“Salvatore was the driving force behind the extraordinary achievement of making Redis a mainstream database with a vibrant community of hundreds of thousands of developers, in just six years,” said Ofer Bengal, CEO and co-founder of Redis. “Salvatore shares the same values as Redis when it comes to open source development — transparency in the development process, choices that are only made for the greatest benefit to users and simple, understandable products. With our team helping Salvatore, we hope to advance Redis even faster.”
